When someone asks where I attended school, I proudly say, "Susquehanna University."

When someone asks where I attended school, I proudly say, “Susquehanna University.” Although I continued my education after SU at Jefferson Medical College, I feel that Susquehanna University prepared and shaped me, and changed the path of my life. Every great thing that has happened in my life can be traced back to my experiences at SU.
One of the most important things for me was that every member of the faculty and staff with whom I interacted knew me by name and really seemed to care about my success in the classroom. Sure the small class sizes helped, but it really felt like it went beyond just name recognition. Attendance was stressed and, for me, knowing that I’d be missed if I didn’t show up made me put in the extra effort to always get to class. If I ever did miss a class, the professor would ask if I was OK. The professors truly cared about my well being.
Cy Stretansky, professor of music and director of choral activities, remains a particular favorite of mine. Cy is so dynamic that he makes you want to learn the music and to watch him when he’s directing. From Cy, I learned how to really listen and blend my voice to become part of the group. Cy made me feel important and stressed that you do not have to be the soloist to be a valuable contributor. Though participating in University Choir was outside the scope of my biology major, it was an extremely valuable experience. I still use the life lessons about teamwork, responsibility, trust, and professionalism that I learned in choir in my daily activities as a father, husband and physician.
